Asmussen, Santana Double Up As Silver Prospector Prevails In Kentucky Jockey Club

Winning his second graded stakes race on the card this Saturday at Churchill Downs, trainer Steve Asmussen and jockey Ricardo Santana, Jr. teamed up with 7-1 shot Silver Prospector to catch the Grade 2 Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes. Watch the Kentucky derby live, The 2-year-old son of Declaration of War, owned by Ed and Susie Orr, found clear running at the far turn and joined the struggle for the lead at the head of this lane.
“This horse has learned how to unwind and was able to do that very well now.”

Silver Prospector broke nicely but laid off the early speed within this start, settling in fifth through the early going. Silver Prospector needed to first shake off the battle of South Bend, then Tiz the Law finally caught a seam between rivals and came together with his run up the interior. When Tiz the Law switched back to his left lead in the sixteenth pole, Silver Prospector was able to maintain his edge and hold off the final rush of 87-1 longshot Finnick the Fierce by three-quarters of a length. Tiz the Law settled for third, and Enforceable had been fourth.
“He managed the sand fine but I never was able to get him out of that spot on the railing,” post-time favorite Tiz that the Law’s jockey Manny Franco explained. Watch the Kentucky Derby live. “He felt great the entire way but he got a bit too much behind horses and we never got through.”
It seemed that Tiz the Law switched to his”incorrect” lead leg at the sixteenth pole.
“Well, it’s disappointing it’s not our day now,” said Tiz the Law’s managing partner Jack Knowlton of Sackatoga Stable. Hopefully we can proceed from the and we will find a strategy for what can be next.”
